How to read a peptide COA

Every serious peptide supplier claims third-party testing. A certificate of analysis (COA) is the document behind the claim — and most buyers never open one. Here is what a COA should contain, what each section means, and how to check ours against the pen in your hand.

The four things to check

Identity: the analysis should name the exact compound and confirm it by mass spectrometry — the measured molecular mass should match the theoretical mass of the peptide sequence.

Purity: expressed as a percentage from HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography). The number matters, but so does the chromatogram: a clean single dominant peak is the visual signature of a pure product.

Batch: a COA without a batch number is marketing, not evidence. The certificate must be traceable to the specific production lot you received.

Issuer: the testing laboratory should be independent of the seller and named on the document.

What purity should a research peptide show?

Reputable suppliers publish HPLC purity of 98% or higher for the compounds we stock. Treat a missing purity figure, a missing method, or a missing batch number as a red flag.
